Shock Move-Games to 11

At the recent AGM of the ITTF in Osaka, Japan, by a large majority, delegates voted to change the scoring system from games up to 21 to games up to 11. This came into effect in Europe from 1st September 2001.

Service will change every 2 points, at 10 all service changes after every point until a player has a 2 point lead.

Sets will now normally be the best of 5 or 9 games, and players will change ends when the score reaches 5 in the deciding game.

The reason for the change is to make the sport more exciting and a much greater spectacle for TV. It is expected that Table Tennis Australia will introduce the change from 1st January 2002. It may be left to individual clubs and associations to decide whether they adopt the new format for local competitions.

A further change coming in 2002 is that on service the ball must be visible to the receiver when the server strikes the ball on service. This change has been delayed to allow players time to adjust their service action.

Top of PageIt is going to be an exciting whole new ball game in 2002. First the introduction of time-out, then the big ball, now games to 11 - what’s next?

February 2001

Li Wang Li Leads Tour to China :

During December 2000 Li Wang Li led a tour of his students and guests to the city of Hang Zhou in Southern China. Hang Zhou is Li's home table tennis club in China.

The tour group consisted of the following players : Roy & Daisy Abbas (Chinese & Friends Club), Matthew Nield (Brighton), May Cho (Sturt), Kitty Leung, Nairu Masaki & Aaron Ong (Chinese & Friends Club), Fiona Tze (Tasmania), Marianna Lee & Perri Campbell-Innes (Qld).

The group stayed in a hotel close to the local table tennis club and trained for approx 6 hours per day. Training was hard compared to the training regime in Australia and all players benefited in the development of table tennis technique.

The tour was not only about table tennis though, each weekend the players would go sight seeing. One of the highlights of the tour was the experience of eating "dog" and performing the "Nutbush" at the hotel. The group also had the experience of travelling to another City to play an exhibition match. Unfortunately the match result was a little one-sided. Overall, the tour was a great success.

LeCornu Challenge

Recently LeCornu's hired the Sturt Clubroom's for an afternoon of table tennis to assist in team building etc. The afternoon was very successful. Should any Sturt Club member wish to hire the Clubroom's for their own business or company for a similar exercise, please contact either Alan Herman or sturt@sttc.org.au.

Big Ball

Top of PageThe big ball has now been in use for a few weeks following resumption of the Sturt Summer Competition. Reaction to the ball has generally been positive. Although, it is interesting to hear the reactions of different players as to what styles of play and types of rubbers the big ball suits. When you next see Kevin Kowlessar ask for his opinion.

Kerry Wins Sports Award

SA Youth Sports Awards sponsored by the Messenger Newspapers and The Department of Education, Training & Development were presented at a glittering presentation evening at Football Park on Tuesday, 5th December 2000. Congratulations to Kerry Bungey for winning the overall female Youth Sports Award for the year 2000.

Kerry enjoyed an excellent year by representing Australia at the Oceania Championships played in New Caledonia.
Kerry won the Oceania Under 17 Junior Girls Singles Championship and was a member of the winning Australian U/18 Women's Team. Kerry was ranked nationally No #1 Under-18 Women and reached the semi-finals of the 2000 Australian Women's Closed Championships!

Congratulations also to Alex Swanson for being one of the individual finalists for the male Youth Sports Award. Alex had an excellent year & narrowly lost the Australian U/18 Boys Singles Final to John Tawadrous of NSW in an enthralling match at ETSA Park. Alex was the leading male player in SA during the year and enjoyed many tournament successes.

Big Ball Arrives

Table Tennis SA have announced that the new 40mm ball will be used in all TTSA competitions from the beginning of next year. This means that the City of Adelaide Championship will be the first tournament where the new big ball will be used. Good to see many players practicing with the new ball to be ready for next year.

Many secret practice sessions happening also. Early opinion is that the big ball is slower and will slow the game down resulting in longer rallies - great for the choppers and players with sound technique.

Veteran's Test Match : Australia vs. New Zealand

Congratulations to the following SA veterans players' who were recently selected to represent Australia in a veteran's test match against New Zealand and played in New Zealand:

[ Eugene Herman - Sturt | Lorraine Baker - Chinese & Friends Club | Alice Abbas - Chinese & Friends Club | Jan Stephens - Woodville | Betty Bird - Woodville | Kay Crowell - Payneham ]

Australia won the test match and dominated events in the tournament that followed.

2000 Sturt Summer Competition proves a great success. This years summer competition on both Monday & Tuesday nights has proven a great success with many new players participating for the first time. Competition is fierce, but friendly, with a good balance of wily veteran players together with the speed, power and confidence of junior & senior players.

Top of PageMany female players successfully participating which is great to see. Individual player performances will soon be able to be viewed at this Webb site - keep watching.
